Port Moody's Abreast In A Boat dragon boat team is giving people the opportunity to try out the sport during a free introductory paddle this weekend in Vancouver.
The organization, which has boats all over the Lower Mainland, has had a team operating in the Tri-Cities for more than a year and is looking to attract new members. The group is made up of women who have survived breast cancer and want to raise awareness about the disease while having fun.
The Port Moody club paddles in Burrard Inlet three times a week, preparing for competitions that take place around the Lower Mainland throughout the season.
Linda Hopwo, an organizer with Abreast in a Boat, said Saturday's event in Vancouver is a great opportunity for people to learn more about dragon boating and see if the sport fits their lifestyle.
"The paddle will give you a chance to try out this sport and to get a feel for what fun it can be on the boat with other fabulous ladies like yourself," she said in an email. "After all, we are all in the same boat."
She said the demonstration is not physically strenuous and people of all fitness levels should be able to try out the sport.
The paddle will be held at Granville Island near the False Creek Community Centre in Vancouver. For more information or to RSVP, email [email protected] before Sept. 14.
