Coquitlam residents have one more chance to have their say on how a historic neighbourhood will take shape over the next 20 years.
Next Wednesday (May 23), the city will host an open house on the update for the Maillardville Neighbourhood Plan, now a 23-year-old document. The event takes place from 4 to 8 p.m. at Place Maillardville (1200 Cartier Ave., Coquitlam).
Under its proposal, the city intends to:
convert some single-family lots for more "innovative" housing projects to densify the area;
include new public plazas, parks and outdoor recreation spaces;
preserve heritage characteristics with new design guidelines for the French-Canadian enclave;
protect streams;
and improve pedestrian and cyclist paths.
Feedback from the open house will be part of the draft neighbourhood plan report, which council is expected to discuss later this summer.
Maillardville, a community founded more than 100 years ago largely by Quebecois pioneers working at the Fraser Mills sawmill, is bordered by Rochester Avenue to the north, Hart and Allison streets to the west, Laurentian Crescent to the east and Highway 1 to the south.

YOUNG MAYORS
If you were Coquitlam's mayor, what would you do this year to make the city better?
That question is being posed by the Coquitlam Youth Council as part of its new survey to gauge the views of young residents.
The online poll, which was launched during Youth Week and is being conducted through the city's recreation department until May 31, asks Coquitlam youth where they keep active; how they rate the city's garbage pick-up, police and fire services, sports fields and trails; and whether they take part in civic activities, for example.
Youth who fill out the form can get a free swim or skate at a Coquitlam recreation facility.
Coquitlam Youth Council is scheduled to present its findings next month as part of its annual appearance before city council.
