Lacrosse gear for children of all ages is needed for donation to KidSport's upcoming used equipment sale in Coquitlam.
Organizer Chris Wilson said families tend to hold on to minor lacrosse gear for a while because it can last many years and because it's expensive. As a result, there's a lack of lacrosse items available at the biannual sale.
Wilson said the event - which is sponsored in part by The Tri-City News and takes place on Saturday, Aug. 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex - is a good way to find second-hand sporting goods for cheap: A child can be outfitted for $100 for hockey compared with $600 for all new pads, skates, helmet and stick.
Last year's two KidSport sales generated $25,000 to fund registration fees for young athletes from low-income families. And combined with other fundraisers, including Operation Red Nose during the Christmas season, KidSport helped 480 children and teens get involved in sports, Wilson said.
To drop off used sporting equipment from now until Aug. 15, visit Centennial secondary school, 570 Poirier St., Coquitlam; or Gleneagle secondary, 1195 Lansdowne Dr., Coquitlam.
As well, between Aug. 4 and 17, donations will be accepted at the Port Coquitlam and Port Moody recreation complexes, Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex in Coquitlam and Thrift-Opolis (D-2579 Lougheed Hwy., Port Coquitlam).
