The Tri-Cities branch of Amnesty International is hosting a Zoom meeting and fundraising dinner on the topic of water as a human right.

The Tri-Cities branch of Amnesty International is hosting a virtual fundraiser and discussion to spread awareness about climate change and water issues.

“The lives of people around the world are being impacted by climate change and many people, especially Indigenous people, are already experiencing destructive changes including intense hurricanes, rising sea levels and prolonged droughts. And this is not just happening in distant lands,” stated organizer Nancy Furness in a news release.

Furness noted that climate change issues are impacting British Columbians with wildfires and extreme weather.

On Friday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m., members and supporters will learn why the climate crisis is a human rights issue and what can be done to call governments to action.

Here are the Tri-City residents who will speak at the virtual meeting, which will be held via Zoom:

  • Nancy Furness will discuss actions taken to help the people of Grassy Narrows, Ont., where high levels of mercury in the water has blighted the lives of generations of Indigenous people
  • Omar Chu will provide information on the work underway to encourage School District 43 to declare itself a Sanctuary School District — ensuring that every child, including those without documentation, can go to school

As well, there will be information on water rights defender Bernardo Caal Xol who has been wrongfully imprisoned for speaking against the destruction of the river Cahabon in north central Guatemala.

Pasta Polo dinner selections are available on the Tri-Cities Amnesty Facebook page. After choosing your meal, e-transfer your payment and meal selection to tricitiesamnesty@gmail.com. Ten dollars from each dinner is going to Amnesty International.
