The Port Moody Police and the Port Moody branch of Rotary International are offering a free spring break youth leadership academy from March 18 to 22.
The academy is designed to give youth the skills they need to become leaders in the community and to help them deal with issues that affect the lives of all young people, including topics such as laws contained in the Criminal Code, drug abuse and alcohol abuse, drinking and driving, crisis intervention, bullying, domestic violence and suicide and self-harm.
Presenters include Youth Services officers, ERT crisis negotiators, former Drug Suppression Team members, ICBC and more.
Students will also hear from a psychologist on group mentality and peer pressure and engage in hands-on self-defence training.
Applicants must be attending a Port Moody school in Grades 11 and 12, or be PoMo residents. Students must be in good standing in all classes and will have to pass a police record check, as well as obtain a letter of reference from a counsellor.
