Re: Letter: Indigenous man 'laughs' at Coquitlam street name dislike (Aug. 7, 2024)
I was reading responses about renaming Mundy Park and I support Mary Joe and Dave Delorme.
Those who responded to being against renaming Mundy Park reflects the ongoing settler colonialism.
It is interesting to point out that the name “Mundy” was lended to be the park name.
I feel our first step for decolonizing is to listen and respect what Indigenous people are going through with the naming of Mundy Park.
I feel we need to take the opportunity to hear their stories and experiences for past decades since George Munday bought the land, which is the root of their trauma and disrupted their ways of living.
I want a new name for Mundy Park that shows respect and honour for Indigenous people because I feel their pain and trauma.
Also, I want the park to reflect Indigenous people with their ways of knowing of the land.
Let’s have dialogues about how to decolonize, and listen to Indigenous people about the impact of the name Mundy Park.
