Letter: The gap between the rich and the poor grows

In Canada, 20 per cent earn 67 per cent of net worth; the bottom 40 per cent have 2.7 per cent, the Coquitlam letter writer states.

The gap between rich and poor.

The Editor:

I’ve been posting about global warming, but now I’m adding the gap between the rich and the poor as an equal threat to the health and safety of people around the world.

For example, in Vancouver, 12 per cent of the population live in poverty; the city has six billionaires and 72 people with assets over $100 million (comparable date is not available for the Tri-Cities).

This number has doubled in the past 20 years and, the gap between the rich and the poor will continue to grow.

In Canada, 20 per cent earn 67 per cent of net worth; the bottom 40 per cent have 2.7 per cent.

Unless we change to a more equitable tax structure, we’ll have a gap like South Africa, Namibia, Russia and Saudi Arabia — the most inequitable countries in the world.
