Letter: Where's the 'affordable' in Burnaby affordable housing?

This letter writer believes laneways are not solving the city's housing needs.

The Editor:

What has happened to the word "affordable" housing in Burnaby? It appears to be left out.

When you let the public engage in housing, it is profit motivated. They invest money into the structure and they have to make a profit in return.

For example, the laneway house under construction in my alley is a 1,500 sq. ft., 25 ft. high three-bedroom, four-bathroom monstrosity that peers into my entire yard and house.

That monstrosity could possibly rent for at least $4,000 a month. Who could afford this? Alberta, here they come.

The city is not solving the problem and the city is destroying our neighbourhoods by building these monstrosities that destroy our privacy and offer nothing in return.

What a ploy.
