Letter: Why did Port Coquitlam leave the LMLGA?

"The cost to the city to be a member is negligible," the writer states.

The Editor:

While councillor Laura Dupont was president of the Lower Mainland Local Government Association (LMLGA), Mayor Brad West removed Port Coquitlam from this vital Association by initiating a vote to council whether to remain a part of the association or to leave.

This is the first time, as far as I understand, that a city has left the non-profit LMLGA — understood as the unified voice of the region.

There has been no reason disclosed other than considering whether Port Coquitlam is still a “good fit” being part of it.

The cost to the city to be a member is negligible.

Is the part of Port Coquitlam moving toward being "a lone ranger" or is there more to the story?

Why was Port Coquitlam removed from this association that every other municipality is a member?

I personally discovered this after listening to Laura’s interview on the podcast April 11, 2022, on TricitiesTv about the benefits of Port Coquitlam’s membership.

I went to the LMLGA webpage only to discover Port Coquitlam was suddenly no longer a member.

Mayor? Councillors? Was there a discussion?

Can you shed more light to your constituents and the other members of the LMLGA, as they too are perplexed on why you withdrew our membership?
