According to provincial data analyzed by The Tri-City News, it was quite rare for parents to name their children Liam or Olivia prior to the 1970s, with the names really taking off in the 1980s.

Rounding out the top five is Emma, Lucas and Oliver, which have also only recently gained in popularity.

While Oliver and Emma appear early in the data, which goes back as far as 1918, the names have gained more prominence since the 1990s.

According to the BC Ministry of Health, 40,565 babies were born in B.C. in 2018, a drop from 2017, when 44,694 babies were born.
