A 24-year-old employee of the BC Liberals will fly the party's flag in Port Coquitlam in the upcoming provincial election.

Coquitlam resident Barbara Lu, a graduate of Archbishop Carney regional secondary school, was named Thursday as the party's candidate to run against the incumbent NDP MLA, Mike Farnworth.

A political science grad from SFU and church youth leader, Lu told The Tri-City News she has been a party member for about a year and has worked as an operations assistant at BC Liberal headquarters since September.

It will be her first time seeking a political seat and she said, "I'm doing it because I want to give back to my community. It has been an aspiration of mine for many years to represent my community in Victoria."

Lu, who moved to Canada 23 years ago with her family from their native Mexico, has been active with other campaigns in the Tri-Cities, including with Dennis Marsden's unsuccessful byelection bid last year against NDP MLA Joe Trasolini.

She has also volunteered with Mayor Richard Stewart's municipal campaign and with Canadian Heritage Minister James Moore's race in the federal riding of Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam.

OPEN HOUSE

The NDP candidate for Port Moody-Coquitlam - and the provincial riding's incumbent MLA - will open his campaign office tomorrow (Friday).

Joe Trasolini is inviting the public to check out his new digs at 9-3130 St. Johns St., Port Moody, on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and there will be an opportunity to speak with Trasolini about the May 14 vote.

Trasolini is being challenged for his seat by BC Liberal contender and Coquitlam Coun. Linda Reimer.
