Coquitlam RCMP are investigating the sudden death of a one-year-old boy at a Coquitlam daycare.

Mounties and the BC Coroners Service were at the scene of the home daycare at 1312 Shaughnessy St. near David Avenue since Monday morning.

Police and emergency services first responded to a 911 call from the residence at 11:40 a.m. Monday, according to RCMP spokeswoman Const. Kristina Biro.

The Shaughnessy Street address is advertised online as the Rattle-N-Roll Daycare, operated by Maria McFerran, but the phone number provided has since been disconnected.

Biro would not speculate on whether the daycare was operating legally or whether foul play was suspected in the child's death but said that the incident "is not a public-safety concern."

"We are committed to finding answers and we will be releasing information related to this investigation as it is safe and appropriate to do so," Biro said in a press release.

The Rattle-N-Roll Daycare is not licensed by the Fraser Health Authority but the health authority's guidelines stipulate that only those facilities that care for three or more children who are not related to the daycare operator or are not a sibling group need a licence.

Const. Biro would not say how many children were under Rattle-N-Roll's care at the time of the child's death but said the daycare operators were co-operating fully with investigators.

Tasha Schollen, a spokesperson for the B.C. Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, said Wednesday the special Child Death Review Unit of the BC Coroners Office would perform an autopsy and Const. Biro confirmed Thursday the autopsy had been completed but the results were not yet known.
