Long weekend Coquitlam speedster caught 180 km/h in 90 zone

The driver appeared to be in a hurry during the early hours of Remembrance Day before RCMP stopped them near the King Edward Street overpass.

A Coquitlam driver was caught doing double time on the Lougheed Highway (7) over the Remembrance Day long weekend.

And with roads potentially getting more dicey, the incident is prompting yet another reminder from local police for commuters to slow down or risk a severe collision — or even worse.

A grey Honda Civic was impounded just after midnight last Friday (Nov. 11), when Coquitlam RCMP traffic cops clocked the driver at 180 km/h heading west on Highway 7 near the King Edward Street overpass.

That's exactly double the speed limit in the area — 90 km/h.

Spokesperson Cpl. Alexa Hodgins confirmed the Class 5 driver was issued the maximum fine for excessive speeding — $483 — under Section 148(1) under the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act.

Their vehicle is also off the road for a seven-day period.

However, that could be extended if a review of the operator's history deems it necessary.

It's not clear, as of this publication (Nov. 15), if the Honda Civic has been or will be given an impoundment beyond the seven-day enforcement.

"Speed is a leading cause of death on B.C. roads," said Hodgins in a statement to the Tri-City News.

"Coquitlam RCMP are requesting drivers to slow down and obey the posted speed limit signs, especially this winter when the roads are subject to rapidly changing weather conditions."

According to ICBC's latest stats, a total of 271 crashes were recorded near the intersection of Lougheed and King Edward Street in the last five years, including 55 in 2021.

There were 552 reported collisions along King Edward from 2017 to 2021 between Brunette Avenue and United Boulevard.
