The city of Port Moody's attempt to keep things cool in its hockey rink obviously scored with people throughout the region.
A photo, posted online by The Tri-City News last Wednesday, that shows a new code of conduct sign at the PoMo recreation complex has drawn a huge amount of attention.
The image went up on The News' Facebook page last Wednesday evening and, as of yesterday morning, it had been viewed by more than 132,000 people, generated 1,800 "likes" and been shared 1,400 times.
TV and radio stations also covered the story.
Port Moody Mayor Mike Clay said he has received numerous emails and had conversations with many people at the rec complex since the story and photo appeared in various media. And the comments have "all been positive," the mayor said. "Everyone has agreed that it is a good reminder and they appreciate the humour as a more subtle approach."
The Spectator Code of Conduct sign reads:
"Please remember:
1. These are kids.
2. This is a game.
3. Parents should cheer for everyone.
4. The referees are human.
5. You and your child do not play for the Canucks."
Meanwhile, Clay said the city will consider adding more code of conduct signs at other PoMo facilities. "Maybe a [Vancouver] Whitecaps reference at the soccer field or something," he quipped.
