Hunter Madsen is the new councillor-elect for the City of Port Moody.
Madsen’s vote total of 1277 in Saturday’s by-election was more than double his nearest competitor, Karen Rockwell, a former councillor who was seeking a return to Port Moody city hall. She finished with 530 votes.
Madsen, 62, is a former digital media executive. He said he ran his campaign to “restore balance on the council and make sure (former councillor) Rick Glumac’s seat is filled by someone who truly shares his commitment to preserving and enhancing the city’s livability.” Glumac resigned his seat in June after he was elected MLA for the riding of Port Moody-Coquitlam.
Madsen forged his profile on Port Moody’s political scene as one of the founders of a community group fighting to prevent the construction of a road through Bert Flinn Park as a second connection to Ioco in anticipation of the redevelopment of the old Ioco townsite.
The results of the vote won't be official until they are validated and declared official by the city's chief electoral officer, likely on Monday.
