A motorcyclists is recovering in hospital with serious but stable injuries after colliding with a minivan in Coquitlam Wednesday night.

The accident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. when a green Ford Windstar traveling westbound on Austin Avenue turned on to Bray Street and crashed into the eastbound motorcycle.

Witnesses the driver of the bike fell off the vehicle and landed about 25 feet away, where he laid motionless face down on the pavement until paramedics arrived. The driver was conscious and able to move his feet when he was loaded onto the ambulance and transported to nearby hospital.

Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung said neither speed or alcohol was a contributing factor in the accident.

He added that as the summer gets underway drivers need to be aware that more motorcyclists will be out on the roads.

"They are smaller and harder to see," he said. "It takes both sides to make things safe, so it is very important to pay extra attention on the road.

He added that it is important for people riding motorcycles to always wear a helmet.
