Maps: A tunnel is going under Coquitlam City Centre. Metro wants to hear from you

An open house tomorrow, March 13, will share information on the massive dig along Coquitlam’s Pipeline Road.

A massive dig starting on Coquitlam’s Pipeline Road will be the subject of an open house tomorrow, March 13.

Metro Vancouver is hosting the drop-in at Douglas College (1250 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam) from 5 to 8 p.m. to talk and gain feedback on the Coquitlam Water Main project in the City Centre neighbourhood.

For residents and business owners unable to make the event, an online survey is open until April 4.

It’s the first time Metro Vancouver has requested public comment on the mega project.

Specifically, the outreach will gauge responses on the tunnel section — a 2 km long shaft along Pipeline Road and Westwood Street in Port Coquitlam, between Guildford Way and Dewdney Trunk Road, where Metro Vancouver will add a 3.5 m diameter water main.

A tunnel boring machine will be used to excavate through the soil and rock, and survey respondents have the opportunity to pick a name for the heavy apparatus.

The northern tunnel shaft and valve chamber will begin at the Inspiration Garden at Pipeline and Guildford Way, and 40 trees will be removed from the area.

Park visitors and neighbours should also expect noise and vibrations when the boring machine is on during working hours.

In total, the new Coquitlam Water Main will stretch 12 km, with construction split into four sections:

  • Robson to Guildford
  • City Centre tunnel
  • Cape Horn
  • Pipeline Road north
