Mayors, councillors reveal what they owe and own

Public documents showing the assets, liabilities and sources of income for Tri-City politicians came out last month.

Public documents showing the assets, liabilities and sources of income for Tri-City politicians came out last month.

And this year's disclosure papers not only offer a glimpse of the personal financial dealings of the new councillors but, also, a look at the statements of the councillors who lost their seats on Nov. 15.

According to the documents, which must be released on Jan. 15 of each year under the Financial Disclosure Act, the area's mayors are busy with non-government work as well as city and regional business.

Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart is the proprietor of Stewart Communications. Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore, who last month was acclaimed as the Metro Vancouver board chair, is the owner/shareholder of Livable Region Consulting Inc. And Port Moody Mayor Mike Clay works for Tero Consulting and owns TTS Automation Inc., a computer consulting firm of which he's the sole shareholder.

As for the newly elected, Coquitlam Coun. Dennis Marsden is the principal of Marsden Communication while Coun. Teri Towner is a snapd photographer. Port Coquitlam Coun. Laura Dupont is a program assistant for Share Family and Community Services while, in Port Moody, Coun. Barbara Junker draws an income from COPE 378, Coun. Meghan Lahti is a provincial director of Sprott-Shaw Community College and Coun. Robert Vagramov is a contractor for Macinhome Inc., a computer business.

A few council members also hold land other than their personal residence, including Stewart, Coquitlam councillors Brent Asmundson, Mae Reid (for an Aldergrove property on Matsqui band land that's currently for sale), Teri Towner (a home in Burnaby) and Chris Wilson; in PoCo, Moore and Coun. Mike Forrest; and PoMo Coun. Zoe Royer (two homes in Peachland).

Also of interest, Wilson - a former Olympian and wrestling world champion - lists 49 companies in which he has investments; Coquitlam Coun. Bonita Zarrillo has eight companies down for her assets, including Apple and Alibaba; and Port Moody Coun. Rick Glumac is a shareholder in 26 firms including DreamWorks and Electronic Arts.

As well, Stewart and Port Moody Coun. Zoe Royer have assets in two numbered companies each - Stewart's a result of the death of his parents, Royer's being for consulting services and software.

Besides elected officials, senior city managers are required to disclose their financial papers; however, those documents are not available for public scrutiny.
