A teenager from Mexico died Sunday after being swept over the edge of Granite Falls, a popular recreation area at the north end of Indian Arm.

Coquitlam RCMP said the 16-year-old boy, who was camping with friends in the area, was swimming in the pools at the top of the waterfall when he was suddenly swept down the falls, plummeting nearly 50 feet.

He was immediately pulled from the water and given CPR by some off-duty nurses who happened to be at the park, but his injuries proved too severe.

Coquitlam RCMP said the boy's family has been contacted by the Mexican consulate but his name is not being released.

Granite Falls is located in Indian Arm Provincial Park, on the eastern side of Indian Arm near Croker Island.
