A mom who lost everything in a fire in Port Coquitlam last Thursday is desperately seeking affordable accommodation for herself and her son.
Chyme Cummings escaped from the morning blaze last week and was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation. Her son wasn't at the home at the time.
The incident occurred shortly after 7 a.m. at the home near Finlay and Prairie, a few blocks from Port Coquitlam Fire Hall No. 2
Today, she's working as a flagger and needs a hard hat, a high-visibility vest and other support, Cummings said, but mostly she's looking for a place to rent for herself and her 15-year-old son, who goes to Terry Fox secondary.
She's currently staying at a local hotel with the support of the Red Cross, but her subsidized stay runs out on Thursday.
"I've never had a disaster happen to me before. Everything is gone," Cummings said.
She had no fire insurance and has lost her cell phone, hearing aids, clothes and other belongings in the blaze.
"My immediate need is where I'm going to live in two days," she said.
