School District 43 has the rare luxury of a funding surplus, according to the latest budget figures, and has identified numerous ways to use the cash to run schools.
On Tuesday, the board of education will once again be reviewing spending of about $268 million including, a small, but useful $1.2 million in extra funds.
The district's leadership team has earmarked the funds for numerous improvements, including support for new programs of choices, such as the Reggio Emilia and Montessori programs, staff training and a work experience teacher.
The board is expected to vote on recommendations at its next board meeting at 7 p.m. in the Gallery Room at Winslow Centre.
Meanwhile, a new assistant superintendent has been announced to replace Dan Derpak, who retired. Carey Chute, who has been principal of facilities initiatives overseeing school construction projects, has been appointed to replace Derpak.
"We are so pleased to have Carey join the District Leadership Team," said board Chair Melissa Hyndes in a prepared statement. "He has a broad base of knowledge and an excellent track record, as well as an easy rapport with various audiences. He will be a welcome addition to the district leadership table."
Married with two children attending SD43 schools, Mr. Chute is in the completion stage of a Doctorate in Educational Leadership at SFU.
