Coquitlam RCMP handed out more than 1,100 charges during their month-long high-risk driving campaign.

In May, officers monitored high crash locations in Coquitlam, PoCo, Anmore and Belcarra. Nearly half of the 1,123 charges issued to drivers were related to high-risk driving behaviours such as speeding and using an electronic device while driving, said Cpl. Jamie Chung.

"Educating the public about road safety and doing targeted enforcement on high-risk driving behaviours work hand in hand," he said. "Strategic traffic enforcement has proven to be a very effective tool for enhancing road safety."

In addition to the provincial charges, 45 drivers were taken off the road for driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Data shows there was a nearly 20% decrease in collisions with injuries during the first five months of this year compared to the same period in 2012.

BAIL CASH

A handful of local politicians, school district personnel and business people will be "arrested" today (Wednesday) to raise money for Coquitlam RCMP's Cops for Cancer team.

Mounties will be raiding schools and offices to arrest, among others, Port Coquitlam Coun. Glen Pollock, Mashiah Vaughn of the Steve Nash/Fitness World gym and School District 43 superintendent Tom Grant. They'll be held in custody on the second floor of Coquitlam Centre mall from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as they raise as much "bail" money as possible for their release.

Funds raised go to Team Coquitlam, made up of five police officers and paramedics, in the upcoming Cops for Cancer Tour de Coast in September. Cops for Cancer raises money for Camp Good Times, a Canadian Cancer Society organization that helps families of kids with cancer.
