More than 5,000 people lost power in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam the afternoon of Jan. 6, 2022.

2:30 p.m.

It appears power is back on to thousands of BC Hydro customers in the Tri-Cities, including nearly 5,000 across Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam.

The provincial service determined a downed tree on wires was the cause of the outage in the Burke Mountain neighbourhood, which also included the areas northeast of Lougheed Highway in PoCo.

As well, power has been restored to nearly 700 customers in Anmore, but its cause is still under investigation.

However, there's a new outage in Coquitlam's Westwood Plateau area impacting 746 households north of Caliente Place.

Electricity went out before 2:15 p.m., crews are being assigned and the incident's cause is also under investigation.

Power is also still out near Simon Fraser University (SFU) due to the overnight snow storm, which is affecting certain Coquitlam and Port Moody homes.

This includes 928 customers north of Beaverbrook Crescent, west of Ailsa Avenue and southeast of University Drive.

ORIGINAL STORY

Thousands of residents across the Tri-Cities are without power — likely due to the recent snowfall and current weather conditions.

BC Hydro is reporting nearly 5,650 customers in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Anmore are off the grid this afternoon (Jan. 6).

The cause of each outage is under investigation, according to the provincial service company.

In Anmore, crews are on site and power is predicted to be restored to 676 customers before 3 p.m. today.

The outage occurred just before noon in the neighbourhood east of Crystal Creek Drive and north of April Road.

Coquitlam's outage — which was recorded before 12:30 p.m. and is just under 5,000 households and businesses — is mainly contained to the Burke Mountain neighbourhood.

BC Hydro's maps shows the areas east of of Cimarron Drive (Coquitlam) and north of Dominion Avenue (Port Coquitlam).

Electricity is expected to be restored shortly before 4 p.m.
