Efforts to rebuild Mossom Hatchery have reached a milestone with the demolition of the fire-damaged building, but more work must be done and money raised to complete the rebuild, said hatchery volunteer Ruth Foster.
"We have had some very generous donations but will need much more in order to do a proper rebuild," said Foster in an email.
Among the supporters have been several businesses, including Pacific Powertech, Colwin Electrical Group, Papove Land Surveyors, Hughes Trucking, Jack Cewe, Raider Hansen and Pacific Blasting and Demolition. The Village of Belcarra also contributed $500.
Planning is underway for a new building that burned down in December and volunteers are looking after about about 3,000 coho smolts from a trailer donated by the City of Port Moody.
Elementary and high school students have been asked to contribute their ideas, including members of the Centennial Fish and Wildlife program, who use the hatchery to learn about salmon and environmental stewardship.
