Lawyers representing two Coquitlam RCMP officers charged with assault following a violent altercation during a routine traffic stop appeared before a provincial court judge in Port Coquitlam Thursday.

Coquitlam RCMP Const. Trevor Doylend, 33, and Const. Marko Duran, 38, each stand charged with one count of assault stemming from a June 17 incident on Prairie Avenue in which the two officers were conducting a speed trap.

According to an RCMP press release, Const. Duran had flagged down a vehicle and issued a ticket to the driver when a fight began between Duran and the driver. The driver was removed from the vehicle and arrested with the assistance of Const. Doylend.

Upon review of video evidence of the arrest taken from the dashboard camera of an RCMP vehicle, however, the two Mounties' supervisor launched a criminal investigation into their conduct and recommended assault charges be brought against both officers.

No charges have been laid against the driver, who never laid a complaint about the altercation.

Lawyers for the Mounties met briefly with the provincial court judge without their clients present Thursday and agreed to review details of the case before returning to Port Coquitlam provincial court Feb. 16.

Const. Duran is currently on administrative duty while Const. Doylend remains on duty with Coquitlam Traffic Services.
