The Tri-Cities' new federal ridings have yet to be officially re-jigged but the area's two MPs have already made up their minds about where they will seek re-election in two years.
This week, Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam Conservative MP James Moore - Canada's industry minister and the party's senior B.C. minister - confirmed he will run in the new riding of Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam.
That constituency will be made up of Coquitlam north of the Barnet and Lougheed highways as well as the city of Port Coquitlam.
Also this week, current New Westminster-Coquitlam NDP MP Fin Donnelly said he'll seek a seat in the new riding of Port Moody-Coquitlam in 2015.
That electoral area includes the villages of Anmore and Belcarra plus the city of Port Moody and Coquitlam south of the Barnet and Lougheed highways.
Speaking with The Tri-City News on Wednesday, Donnelly, the NDP caucus chair for B.C., said he doesn't like the commission's redistribution as it cuts out his part of New Westminster, a stronghold for the NDP. But Donnelly said he recently consulted with other MPs and party and riding officials, who agreed he had "the strongest chance for re-election in Port Moody-Coquitlam" than in neighbouring constituencies. "It's what makes the most sense," Donnelly said.
Burnaby-New West MP Peter Julian, the national NDP caucus chair, told The Tri-City News he hasn't decided if he'll run in the New Westminster-Burnaby East or Burnaby South riding.
The new B.C. ridings are expected to become official this fall.
