SUMMER MUSIC

Kalimba, a 10-piece tribute band covering the songs by Earth, Wind and Fire, hits the PCT Performance Stage at Rocky Point Park (2800-block of Murray Street, Port Moody) for a free show as part of the Summer Sundays Concerts series. Donations are accepted to the Crossroads Hospice Society. The show starts at 2 p.m.

ART SHOWS

Tour the galleries at PoMo Arts (formerly the Port Moody Arts Centre, 2425 St. Johns St.) to view the summer exhibitions: Caring (ceramics artists in residence from 1998–2023); and Honouring the Past, Embracing the Future (PoMoArts 25th anniversary). The facility is open on weekdays from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

August 7

POMO FAMILY FUN

Join Port Moody recreation staff at Easthill Park (1385 Union St.) for a play day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free activities include basketball, bocce, badminton and arts; there will also be bubbles and face painting. Staff will be back at the park on Aug. 13 and 21. Meanwhile, civic-led play days will also be set up at the North Shore Community Park (1400 David Ave.) on Aug. 8, 15 and 22 (same times); Westhill Park (203 Westhill Pl.) on Aug. 9, 16 and 23; Kyle Park (2501 St. George St.) on Aug. 10, 17 and 24; and Heritage Mountain Park (20 Parkglen Pl.) on Aug. 11, 18 and 25.

SPLISH SPLASH

Join Mounties, fire fighters, community police volunteers and Metro Vancouver Transit Police for the PoCo Spray Day at the Terry Fox Hometown Square, south of the Port Coquitlam Community Centre (2150 Wilson Ave.). Bring your water pistols for games from 1 to 3 p.m.

ECO CINEMA

Watch a documentary about climate change then be part of a discussion with Tri-City members of Force of Nature at the City Centre branch of the Coquitlam Public Library (1169 Pinetree Way) from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The 90-minute film is titled The Magnitude of All Things (2020) and focuses on the filmmaker’s childhood in Ontario.

August 11

POETRY IN MOTION

Catch the debut of The Porter’s Revival by the Nigerian-born, South African-raised Lolu Oyedele, the writer-in-residence this summer at Mackin House Museum in Coquitlam. Oyedele, an interdisciplinary artist, created an original immersive performance inspired by the stories of discrimination against Black porters by the rail companies and others in the early 20th century. His short shows in the CP Rail caboose outside Mackin House Museum (1116 Brunette Ave., Coquitlam) run from 5 to 7 p.m., as well as on Aug. 25. The in-situ performances are free; however, registration is required.

COVER BANDS

The four Js — Jay Leonard Juatco, Jay Esplana, Jason Nickel and Jonny Holisko, better known as Trilojay — cover the hits on the Asylum Sound Stage in Hard Rock Casino Vancouver (2080 United Blvd., Coquitlam) starting at 9:30 p.m. The show is for adults only; there is no entry charge. On Aug. 12, The Rain City 6 performs at the Asylum with DJ Fady Main.

August 12

DON’T DUMP IT

Take your broken or torn items like small appliances, bikes and clothing to the Repair Cafe where volunteers and city staff will attempt to repair it — for free. The cafe runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the City of Port Coquitlam works yard (1737 Broadway St.).

DUMPLING FEST

The second annual BC Dumpling Fest returns to Town Centre Park (1299 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam) with dozens of multicultural dumpling vendors, performers and artists. Organized by the Asian Arts and Culture Society and sponsored in part by the Tri-City News as well as the City of Coquitlam, the festival from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. aims to highlight global connections and diversity in the community. The dumpling vendors lined up include Como Joy, Nina’s Pirogies, Pasta Polo, Dungan House, Sun Star Restaurant, Mr. Siopao, Morgan’s Harbour, Chef Tony Dim Sum, House of Yee and K-Ipse. Last year’s event saw 25,000 attendees.

CHILDREN’S AUTHOR

Hear from Eileen Holland, a former Coquitlam elementary school teacher and author of two chapter books for kids, at the Tri-City Wordsmiths gathering. DOUBLE FEATURE

You can watch movies inside — and outside — at Port Moody City Hall (100 Newport Dr.) courtesy of the Port Moody Film Society. At 7 p.m., the group will screen Living, featuring Bill Nighy, in the Inlet Theatre and at 9 p.m., weather permitting, there will be an outdoor viewing of another British drama: The Duke, starring Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren. Admission is by cash or cheque at $5 per film plus a $5 annual society membership.

GRAMMY WINNER

Enjoy a barbecue meal on the patio at the Evergreen Cultural Centre (1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam) before heading inside for a concert from the Grammy- and Latin Grammy-winning musician Alex Cuba. His show wraps up the venue’s Music on the Grill summer series. Tickets are $69 for the meal and concert, or $45 for the performance only that starts at 7:30 p.m.

TRIBUTE TO JOE

The Summer Sundays Concerts series is back at Rocky Point Park (2800-block of Murray Street, Port Moody) with a nod to Joe Cocker. Terry Raible and his band bring the Feelin’ Alright show to the PCT Performance Stage at 2 p.m. The event is free; donations for the Crossroads Hospice Society will be accepted. August 15

WRITING WORKSHOP

Young scribes ages 12 to 18 years old can join Lolu Oyedele, the artist in residence for the Coquitlam Heritage Society, for a writing workshop at Mackin House Museum (1116 Brunette Ave., Coquitlam) from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; a second event is on Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. to noon. The sessions are free.

KALEIDOSCOPE

Two indie rock bands from B.C. — The Zolas and Current Swell — headline the City of Coquitlam’s annual Kaleidoscope Arts Festival at Town Centre Park (1299 Pinetree Way). The free concerts start at 6 p.m. on the Town Centre Park Community Stage.

LIVE MUSIC

KALEIDOSCOPE 2.0

Continue the City of Coquitlam’s Kaleidoscope Arts Festival from noon to 4 p.m. at Blue Mountain Park (975 King Albert Ave.). There will be free musical and multicultural performances, workshops and activities, as well as food trucks.

Try out a new board game with your friends, family or a new acquaintance at the City Centre branch of the Coquitlam Public Library (1169 Pinetree Way) from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The event is recommended for ages eight and up. No experience is needed and registration is not required.

CAR CRUISE

Put your lawn chair on the curb to watch the parade of classic, vintage and muscle cars through the City of Port Coquitlam to kick off the annual Downtown Port Coquitlam Car Show on Sunday. The evening cruise will see about 100 vehicles in the car display leaving the downtown at 6 p.m. and travelling the southern and northern routes of the city for 90 minutes. POCO CAR SHOW

Hundreds of buffed up classic and custom vehicles from around the Pacific Northwest will be parked in downtown Port Coquitlam for the annual car show. Presented by Metro Ford Motors, the day-long event that attracts more than 20,000 visitors will also include a free model car workshop, kids activities and food.

Reza Bahiri performs folk music from Iran from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Writer-in-residence Lolu Oyedele will also deliver his spoken word poetry during the intermission. No registration is required.

They’re sexy and they know it! FLAMENCO FUSION
