Name change for new Anmore middle school

A new middle school under construction in Anmore Village will now be called Eagle Mountain not Twin Lakes as originally proposed.

A new middle school under construction in Anmore Village will now be called Eagle Mountain not Twin Lakes as originally proposed.

Trustees torpedoed the name Twin Lakes, which was chosen from 40 submissions and was supposed to signify the school's proximity to Buntzen and Sasamat lakes, because of complaints from the community.

Trustees then chose Eagle Mountain because it was more popular among students.

Trustee Keith Watkins, who proposed the motion to change the name to Eagle Mountain middle, argued that trustees previously chose Twin Lakes without knowing that Eagle Mountain was the preferred choice in a survey of 120 students.

Watkins pointed out that it was his vote that allowed the Twin Lakes name to survive what would have been a tie vote at the last board meeting and he wanted to bring back the issue.

STUDENTS FAVOURED EAGLE MOUNTAIN

According to the survey, 100 students favored Eagle Mountain, while only 10 preferred Twin Lakes middle and 10 chose the name Anmore middle.

However there is still likely to be some disgruntlement in the new name for the $33 million, 500 student school slated for occupancy in the fall of 2014.

Before the vote, the Mayor of Anmore made a presentation to trustees, asking the name be changed to Anmore middle.

"Naming the school Anmore middle school will clear up any confusion about where this school is located and will establish a strong connection for Anmore residents that this school is part of their community," Heather Anderson said.

Anderson added that the name Anmore middle would foster a sense of pride in the village, which already has an elementary school named Anmore.

"There really isn't another name to connect this school to the Village of Anmore, other than the name Anmore middle school," she said.
