For as long as anyone can remember, Joyce Lissimore has been helping homeless people get food and comfort.

Now, the Port Coquitlam volunteer is being honoured for her contributions.

Lissimore has been awarded the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, an official Canadian honour that recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of individuals from across the country or abroad, in a wide range of fields.

Lissimore has been a volunteer with PoCo's Trinity United Church and the food bank, and has helped the homeless in the region receive access to shelter, food, clothing and medical services.

“Her advocacy work as part of the Tri-Cities Homelessness Task Group was a driving force in opening the Rain City housing facility and the extreme weather shelter in the Tri-Cities,” said nominator Judy Johnson of Trinity United Church.

The Sovereign’s medal was presented to Lissimore Sunday at the church.
