The city of Port Coquitlam is adding to its outdoor gym equipment.

Three new exercise pods that feature nine separate pieces of equipment have been built along the corridor between Lions Park and the 12-piece outdoor gym at Gates Park.

The equipment replicates pieces found in commercial gyms, such as plyo boxes, a sit-up bench, chest press, lat pull-downs, a rower and exercise bars, among other pieces.

Free demonstrations of the equipment will be conducted on Aug. 10, between 6:30 and 8 p.m. as part of the Get Active in the Park summer series. Volunteers will also be on hand at peak times throughout the summer to assist equipment users and provide healthy living information.

The city said that the addition of the trailside exercise pods provides free and accessible options for citizens to get active. The equipment is suitable for people of all ages and abilities and many of the pieces can be scaled for all levels, from beginners to advanced exercisers.

Funding for the new pods came from a 2012 Union of BC Municipalities healthy living grant program, which gave $20,000 to the city last winter.
