A replacement has been found for outgoing Coquitlam RCMP Supt. Claude Wilcott.
Sean Maloney, a 33 year veteran of the RCMP, will take over as the top cop for the detachment, which also oversees Port Coquitlam, Anmore and Belcarra and the Kwikwetlem First Nation.
"As soon as I heard that the job of OIC Coquitlam RCMP was available, I knew I wanted it," he said in a press release. "The men and women of Coquitlam RCMP are known as an exceptionally talented, tight knit, innovative group and this detachment has a reputation as having a very strong connection to the communities it serves. I'm really excited to be part of this team."
Maloney joined the force in 1981 and most recently served as the operations officer in Richmond. He has served in administrative, operational and executive roles and spent 11 years on the Emergency Response Team and five years with E Division's Aboriginal Policing section.
"He has a successful track record in a similar-sized community, first-hand knowledge of both the public safety opportunities and challenges that come with introducing SkyTrain service and hands-on experience in the delivery of effective crime reduction strategies," said Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart. "This not only makes him especially well-suited to lead the third largest RCMP detachment in Metro Vancouver, but also will allow him to build on the success that has earned our local detachment a 95% approval rating from Coquitlam residents."
Maloney was born and raised in Gander, Nfld., and was first posted to Trail, B.C.. His son is also a Mountie serving in the Agassiz detachment.
