Nearly 20% of Coquitlam residents who get garbage pick-up at curbside have opted for different trash or green carts under the new program that starts this summer.
A total of 4,441 asked city staff to either upsize or downsize their new bins, which the city will roll out this month and next.
The city will be providing garbage and green carts to around 25,000 single-family homes as part of the change-over to an automated pick-up system run by BFI Canada starting July 2.
Coquitlam residents who made no selection for their cart size will get the standard 240 l bins.
The city's communications manager, Kathleen Vincent, said homeowners who want to change their bin size after the roll-out can exchange them - at no charge - until Dec. 31. A 360 l cart will cost about $120 more on the annual utility bill while a 120 l cart will save $70.
The various carts are on display until July 1 at Coquitlam city hall, City Centre Aquatic Complex, the City Centre library branch, Dogwood and Glen Pine pavilions, Pinetree community centre, Place Maillardville and Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex.
Under the new program, garbage will be collected at the curbside every two weeks while food waste and yard trimmings will be hauled away weekly.
