Coquitlam council is moving ahead with plans to build a performance plaza and amphitheatre on the east side of Lafarge Lake and has hired a landscape consultant to do some detailed planning.

The project, with an estimated cost between $1 million and $2 million, and to be built with grants and $1 million from bonus density funds, will provide performance space for major outdoor events as well as year-round recreational space.

According to a city report, public opinion is evenly split between those who approve of the project and those who oppose it for reasons that include concerns about noise and environmental impact.

But the report reviewed by city council Monday noted that an environmental assessment will be conducted to review the project and trees will be planted to replace those lost during construction.

The staff report also noted that design and programming issues, such as those related to noise and late hours, can be be managed.
