The city of Port Moody is encouraging residents to cast their votes for the best businesses.

The annual Spike Awards recognize the best of Port Moody business, and the city is asking residents to nominate a local company that's showcasing technology, celebrating the arts or excelling in customer service. Besides highlighting great work in the community, nominators also have a chance to win an iPad.

"Through the Spike Awards, we get to hear about businesses that really stand out in our community" said Coun. Rosemary Small, chair of PoMo's economic development committee. "Last year, we had over 250 nominations. If you know of a company who's really made a difference, now's the time to recognize them."

Two new categories have been added to this year's awards - employer of choice and best home based business. Residents have until Sept. 27 to make their nominations by going to www.portmoody.ca.

As well, Port Moody is in search of a One-minute Pitch champion.

"We're giving anyone one minute and one PowerPoint slide to sell us on their best business idea at our Oct. 24 award ceremony," said Mayor Mike Clay.

Those interested in pitching their business idea can email [email protected] or call 604-469-4540 to sign up. The winner will get a six-month pass to the Port Moody recreation complex.

The nominees for the eighth annual Spike Business Awards will be recognized at a gala event at city hall on Oct. 24.
