A former radio reporter and UBC graduate student will be up against Conservative MP James Moore in the fall federal election.

On Sunday, Sara Norman won the nomination, on the first ballot, to represent the NDP in the new riding of Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam.

Norman faced former Coquitlam city council candidate Michael Bell in the NDP vote, which was held at the Coquitlam Public Library on Sunday.

In a press release, the Coquitlam resident said running for office is personal. "I feel like this community is my extended family and I care deeply about what happens within the riding," she stated.

Last year, Norman won a national award for her story on Moore and child poverty.

No Liberal candidate has been chosen yet for the riding. The federal election is scheduled for October.
