When spring is full bloom, one can't help but smile at the illuminated colours.
A group of Tri-Cities musicians are set to bring the season to life through classical music in Port Moody this weekend, and they'll be performing with veterans of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
The Smile of Spring concert is set to focus on the sounds of woodwind instruments like flute and clarinet, as well as a piano to provide rhythm and foundation.
Host Yarilo Contemporary Music Society said the show is meant to be a celebration of spring, which, in many cultures around the world, signals the start of a new year or a clean slate.
The Port Moody-based organization said the annual two-hour performance has also become popular in the Pleasantside neighbourhood and its community association has played a big role in making the event a reality.
Yarilo's 2023 program includes Chopin's "Ballad #4, Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune" [The Afternoon of a Faun] by Claude Debussy in an arrangement for Flute, Clarinet and Piano, and the "monumental" Sonata for flute and piano by Cesar Franck.
Kathryn Cernauskas (flute), Johanna Houser (clarinet), Dr. Anna Levy and Shirley Cha (piano) are the local musicians to grace the stage for The Smile of Spring.
The concert is slated for Saturday (May 13), 2 to 4 p.m. at Old Orchard Hall (646 Bentley Rd.).
