One hiker dead, a second rescued on Eagle Ridge

Coquitlam Search and Rescue said the victim fell while trying to descend a steep gulley and died at the scene

One hiker is dead and another has been rescued after the pair got lost on Eagle Ridge near Buntzen Lake Wednesday night, according to Coquitlam Search and Rescue. 

In a Tweet posted shortly after 11 p.m., SAR said one of the hikers fell while trying to climb down a gulley in the area and died at the scene. 

“We can confirm that tonight’s rescue was a party of two hikers who got lost on Eagle Ridge,” said Coquitlam SAR in a statement posted to their official Twitter account. “While descending a steep gulley one of the two fell and died at the scene. Rescuers transported both out of the field via long line. Our condolences to family and friends of the deceased.”

The search initially began at around 8 p.m. with the use of Talon Helicopters. By 9 p.m., SAR said they had located the subjects. Two hours later, rescuers confirmed that one of the hikers had died in the incident.
