People looking to learn more about Islam - and participate in an international food fair - are invited to attend an open house at the Masjid Al-Hidayah and Islamic Cultural Centre in Port Coquitlam this Sunday.
The event, which has been held annually by the organization since 1998, will feature an interactive question and answer session and will offer participants a chance to tour the Kingsway Avenue mosque.
"People will be coming and going throughout the day," said Saad Bahr, the president of the Islamic Society of B.C. "There will be discussions and... people will get to ask questions."
Some of the discussions will centre around the role of women in the Islamic faith. Bahr said participants will get to ask questions and learn more about Muslim women's attire, roles, rights and status in the Muslim community.
"We will discuss any issues relating to women in Islam," Bahr said.
But the event will also highlight other aspects of the religion.
People will get the chance to try on traditional Islamic clothes and there will be gallery displays of various art work.
There will also be a food fair, giving participants the chance to try dishes from all over the world.
Based on last year's numbers, Bahr predicts between 300 and 350 people will attend the event throughout the afternoon.
The open house will be held between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Masjid Al-Hidaya and Islamic Cultural Centre (2626 Kingsway Ave., Port Coquitlam). For more information about the organization go to www.islam-canada.com or email [email protected].
