Options for new Brunette overpass coming

Gridlocked interchange to get an overhaul, options, recommendations coming in April

Health minister Terry Lake said in a statement improving the Brunette/Highway 1 exchange critical for Royal Columbian Hospital expansion.

The long-awaited review and plan for the congested Brunette Avenue and Highway 1 interchange is about to take place.

The B.C. government announced it will reveal in April options and a recommendation for a new interchange for public consideration.

The initiative is part of BC on the Move, the province's 10-year transportation plan, to reduce gridlock and improve safety at this highly congested area on the New Westminster and Coquitlam border.

Both cities will be consulted as part of the Brunette interchange project, and follows a memorandum of understanding reached to provide for the efficient and effective movement of people and goods in advance of the expansion of Royal Columbian Hospital in New West.

"As we move forward with the major redevelopment of RCH, improvements to the Brunette overpass will ensure the hospital serves the region well in years to come," health minister Terry Lake said in press release.
The minister also acknowledged the interchange is a bottleneck on the Highway 1 corridor, especially at peak times, and improving the overpass is critical.

"We are ready to get working on a revamp to break the bottleneck and get traffic moving again, and will continue to work closely with New Westminster and Coquitlam on plans moving forward," Lake added in the release.
