Party on New Year's Eve - and then give blood

Thinking of making a New Year's resolution that will make a difference to someone else? Donating blood might just earn you karma points for 2015.

Thinking of making a New Year's resolution that will make a difference to someone else? Donating blood might just earn you karma points for 2015.

This holiday season, Canadian Blood Services is inviting all Canadians to take part in its Wrap it up Red holiday campaign, and with the next Coquitlam blood clinic taking place on Jan. 1, this can be part of an New Year's resolution to help others.

"It's the most important gift readers can give this year - it is the gift of life," said David Patterson, director of donor relations for B.C. and the Yukon.

New Year's Day is a holiday for many, and giving blood not the first thought for some celebrants, but Patterson said the clinic that day shows how important it is to give blood because "every minute of every day someone in Canada needs blood, the need doesn't go away on holidays."

And to get the point across, the Canadian Blood Services is asking people to take part in the "Wrap it Up Red" campaign by sharing a a photo or video of themselves wearing or wrapping something up in red, stating why they are supporting Canadian Blood Services. Posts can be made to Twitter, Facebook or Youtube, using the hashtag #WrapItUpRed.

The upcoming clinic in Coquitlam takes place Thursday, Jan. 1 from 1 to 8 p.m. at Mundy Park Christian Fellowship, 2600 Austin Ave. and there are dozens of open appointments.
