A 31-year-old man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after he was struck in a marked crosswalk on Shaughnessy Street on Dec. 29.

He was crossing at Whyte Avenue in Port Coquitlam just before 4 p.m. when he was hit by a Toyota van heading south on Shaughnessy. The driver of the van remained at the scene and is co-operating with investigators, who have ruled out speed and drug or alcohol impairment as contributing factors.

"Incidents like this are a stark reminder that we should all take extra precautions," said Cpl. Neil Roemer, head of Coquitlam RCMP's traffic services section, in a release. "Whether you're behind the wheel, on a bike or on foot you should be taking precautions - be visible, be predictable, be aware of your surroundings. The stakes are too high to take road safety for granted."

Police are asking witnesses or anyone with information about the collision to contact them at 604-945-1550 and quote file number 2014-37177 or Crime Stoppers at 1-877-222-8477 or www.crimestoppers.ca.
