A 23-year-old man is recovering in hospital after being struck by a vehicle along the Mary Hill Bypass near Broadway Street at around 8:40 p.m. Thursday night.

The Coquitlam RCMP said the pedestrian was intoxicated and wearing dark clothes at the time of the incident and the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene.

"The driver was extremely cooperative," said Const. Jamie Phillipson. "He wasn't impaired and there is no reason to believe the vehicle he was driving was faulty."

He added that the injuries to the 23-year-old were serious but that he had been upgraded to stable condition on Friday.

Phillipson also noted that the Mary Hill Bypass is not a good place for pedestrians and that people should only walk along the stretch of highway in emergency situations. Even then, pedestrians should be face oncoming traffic and stay as far to the side of the road as possible, he added.

"It's a lot safer that way," Phillipson said.
