A stranded boat at Rocky Point Park Pier has prompted the city of Port Moody to nix the annual Penguin Plunge.

The popular fundraiser, hosted by the Pleasantside Community Association, was cancelled by the municipality tonight (Dec. 31) after the grounded boat ended up on the concrete launch, where hundreds of revellers are due to run tomorrow at 1 p.m.

Here's the city's communication, as of 5 p.m.:

Penguin Plunge Cancelled

We regret to inform everyone that the Penguin Plunge has been cancelled. As you can see, we had an issue with a boat stranded at the boat launch today and it's not likely it will be cleared in time to allow safe access to the water tomorrow.
We apologize for the inconvenience - we hate losing this annual event. Please share this so we don't have too many disappointed people showing up tomorrow.
Have a happy and safe New Year!
