Port Coquitlam’s Gates Park will come alive with the sights, sounds and scents of Persia on April 3.

That’s when the Sizdah Badar will be held to celebrate the 13th — and final — day of the Persian New Year, also known as Nowruz.

Also known as Nature Day, it marks the transition from winter to spring, with warmer weather, longer days and seasonal blossoms.

It acts as an opportunity to spend the day outdoors, visiting with family and friends.

The free event, that runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., includes family activities like dodgeball, soccer, tug of war, and koshti, or Iranian wrestling, as well as cultural entertainment, music, dancing and food vendors that gets underway at 12:30 p.m.

There will also be exhibits by local community groups and nature-based arts and crafts activities.

Nowruz traditionally begins on the first day of spring and it has been celebrated by various Persian communities for more than 3,000 years.

The Port Coquitlam event is organized by the Tri-City Futsal Academy, along withe the Wondrous Tree Fellowship and PoCo Arts Council.
