It’s just a little orb of dough and filling, but last Saturday more than 35,000 people descended on Coquitlam’s Town Centre Park to celebrate dumplings at the second annual BC Dumpling Festival.
The event is organized by the Asian Arts and Culture Society, which was founded by Gina Chong after a racist encounter in the park in 2021.
It featured multicultural performance and vendors serving up all varieties of dumplings including, according to a press release issued today (Aug. 14):
- 23,800 of Korean mandus
- 6,000 gluten-free dumplings
- 5,000 dim sum
- 3,000 perogies
- 3,500 wontons
- 1,500 siu baos
- 930 Jamaican patties
There was also a dumpling eating contest — with Coquitlam Coun. Matt Djonlic proclaimed as the winner — a kids' zone and an art zone.
Last year's inaugural event drew about 20,000 visitors to Town Centre Park.
