PHOTOS: Scrappy contest sends Terry Fox Ravens to 2022 BC AAAA basketball provincial final

A blue banner is coming to Port Coquitlam, but which school will prevail?

For the third time this year, the Terry Fox Ravens are set to meet their SD43 rivals in the finals of a big basketball tournament in 2022.

The Port Coquitlam secondary school, ranked third in the 2022 BC AAAA senior girls provincials, defeated the number-two Okanagan Mission Huskies by a score of 83-76 to advance to the gold medal game.

Terry Fox will see the top-seeded Riverside Rapids Saturday night (March 5) at the Langley Events Centre (LEC).

The two Tri-City squads also met in the finals of Fraser North regionals and the Tsumura Basketball Invitational this past season, with Riverside coming out on top in both matches.

Ravens head coach Mike Carkner is confident his team can find a way to suppress the losing side of a Terry Fox-Riverside match-up for al the marbles.

He believes it'll take a consistent team effort to capture the BC AAAA crown.

"Just the same kind of effort we've shown the past two nights [of the provincials tournament] and the grit and our top players coming to play," he said when asked by the Tri-City News.

Lauren Clements commanded the scoreboard with a game-high 45 points Friday night (March 4), including a 50 per cent rate from the three-point line and converted 18 of 34 field-goal attempts.

"She was spectacular," said Carkner about his starting guard's performance Friday, who's also arguably in tournament MVP conversation.

"I've always said I think she's the best two-way players in the province and I think she showed that tonight."

The UFV Cascades commit also added nine defensive rebounds — tied with point guard Cerys Merton.

Ana-Maria Misic also signed pen to paper to UFV in December with Clements and tallied 13 points herself and went 80 per cent from the free-throw line

Emily Sussex, who will face her sister Avery tomorrow, lead the way with 12 rebounds for Terry Fox, including eight on the defensive side of the ball.

The Ravens held the lead after each quarter of play in the second semi-final despite the Huskies' close efforts to stay alive.

In fact, the largest deficit at a break was by eight points when Clements hit a three at the buzzer for a 45-37 advantage heading into the locker room at half-time.

Okanagan Mission came as close as a single point in the late stages of the third quarter to keep the Kelowna school's hopes at a banner alive.

But the black, red and white were able to soar with ease with a 22-point final frame to book their ticket to the final.

The provincial championship between Terry Fox and Riverside is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the LEC Centre Court.
