A Facebook page had been set up in support of the Lower Mainland police officers who were detained in Cuba.

A Port Moody police officer is back from Cuba after courts upheld an acquittal of a charge related to an alleged sexual assault.

In a press release Saturday, Port Moody Police Department confirmed that the officer is back in B.C.

Const. Jordan Long of the PMPD had been detained for several months, along with Const. Mark Simms of the Vancouver Police Department.

Long had been acquitted by a Cuban judiciary regarding allegations of being an accessory to a sexual assault but an appeal by prosecution delayed his return to Canada.

Without naming names, the PMPD stated that it learned Jan. 4 that the prosecution's appeal was rejected and the acquittal was upheld.

Following the acquittal, the travel restriction was lifted by the Cuban authorities and the PMPD officer was allowed to return to Canada.

"The Port Moody Police Department acknowledges that this has been an extremely difficult situation for all involved and the member is asking for privacy," the press release further stated.
