The Port Coquitlam Farmers Market reopens at Leigh Square next Thursday.

And the start of the season will also bring a tradition for the market’s 11th year: the cutting of a giant carrot cake.

The reception on June 6 at 4 p.m. also includes a Kids Korner and entertainment at the bandshell. As well, chefs will show off their dishes — using ingredients from market vendors — while other activities will take place for the celebration.

Running Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m. until Oct. 10, the market is now managed by Ellen Fowler who recently took over from Aynsley Wong Meldrum.

Each week will have a new theme such as:

• Bring Your Grandparent To The Market (June 13)

• National Indigenous People Week (June 20)

• and Bike to the Market (June 27).

Supported by the Vancity Shaughnessy Street and Fremont branches, the market partners with the BC Farmers Markets Nutrition Coupon Program to provide fresh produce to lower-income families and seniors.
