Farmers markets aren't just about fresh produce, although they are a great place to get locally-grown veggies and fruit.
Farmers markets, such as the Port Coquitlam market running Thursdays 3-7 p.m. at Leigh Square, are also incubators for small, start-up businesses.
One such new business is Dee Licious Cupcakes.
Owned and operated by Coquitlam grandmother Deborah Williamson, Dee Licious Cupcakes is a new take on a popular baked treat. Not only does Williamson decorate her buttery cupcakes with elegant flare, she also makes cupcakes in the shape of snow cones and sugar cookies of all shapes, which she impales on sticks for easy, non-messy eating.
"I think about cupcakes all the time. I'm always dreaming up new ideas for feature cupcakes," says Williamson.
An avid baker, Williamson was always making desserts for family and friends as a favour until someone suggested she start her own business.
Today, Williamson caters as well as producing 12 different kinds of cupcakes for the Port Coquitlam Farmers Market. "The kids enjoy them and I just love doing them."
