Coquitlam RCMP are looking for footage of a "suspicious" man from an area of Poirier Street, where a resident recently claimed a sex assault took place.

An investigation by Coquitlam RCMP could be linked to a social media post about an alleged sexual assault in the city.

The post claimed a female student was accosted by an unidentified male on Poirier Street on the morning of Aug. 22.

Today (Sept. 1), police said they're seeking video and witness accounts of an incident involving a "suspicious" man that occurred on the same day, and in the same area, where the social media post claims the alleged assault took place.

Mounties are asking for footage of any person acting oddly, or any suspicious vehicles, between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. on that Monday from the 900-block Poirier Street, near Harbour Drive.

While police did not confirm if the two are connected, the detachment said, in a response to a concerned citizen's Twitter post, it was aware of the alleged assault "and are currently investigating."

"It's so scary since it was unprovoked and random, and could've happened to anyone," the circulated post reads.

"Be careful and try not to go out alone."

RCMP have not released any other details at this time as the case is still being investigated.

Anyone with more information, dashcam or video of a suspicious man in the Poirier Street area is encouraged to call Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 and quote file-number 2022-22248.
